ISSUE 03_WELCOME CLASS _BY ANTHONY RICHARDSON [WWW.THATARCHITECTURESTUDENT.COM] _SUBJECTS_ # DEAR ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL..... THESE ARE JUST FOUR OF THE 140 STUDENTS TO EXPECTING TO COMPLETE THEIR MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE AND BECOME GRADUATES THIS YEAR. EACH STUDENT HAS THEIR OWN JOURNEY AND GOALS IN LIFE, SO LET’S MEET THEM..... 2016 CASEY HAS BEEN AN AVERAGE STUDENT, DOING OKAY BUT NEVER EXCELLING. HE KNOWS A COUPLE LOCAL ARCHITECTS DUE TO HIS FATHER BEING IN THE INDUSTRY, AND PLANS ON WORKING FOR HIS FATHER THEN STARTING THIS OWN ARCHITECTURE FIRM AMY HAS BEEN A HIGH ACHIEVER, HAS BEEN INVOLVED HEAVILY INVOLVED IN COMMITTEES AND EVEN HAS WORK EXPERIENCE. SHE PLANS TO WORK FOR MULTIPLE LARGE INTERNATIONAL FIRMS WHICH WILL ALLOW HER TO TRAVEL AND GAIN EXPERIENCE ACROSS A RANGE OF LARGE PROJECTS IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS TRUDY HAS GONE WELL IN HER DEGREE, ACHIEVING CONSISTENT MARKS AND PRODUCING GREAT STUDIO PROJECTS. SHE OFTEN ATTENDS GUEST LECTURES AND IS ALWAYS ASKING QUESTIONS OF THE TUTORS, WANTING TO LEARN MORE. HER GOAL IS TO WORK LOCALLY THEN START HER OWN PRACTICE BORIS HAS BEEN TOP OF HIS CLASS IN DESIGN STUDIOS, ALTHOUGH HIS OTHER SUBJECTS SUFFER AS A RESULT, OFTEN DESIGNING SOMETHING THAT RECEIVES NOTHING BUT PRAISES. HE PLANS ON STARTING HIS OWN FIRM AND BECOMING AN INTERNATIONAL RENOWNED STARCHITECT IT IS NOW TWENTY YEARS LATER AND THEY ARE AT THEIR REUNION, IN THE SAME BUILDING. EVERYONE FROM THE 140 GRADUATES FROM 2016 HAVE GONE ON TO LIVE DIFFERENT LIVES, BUT LET’S CHECK BACK IN WITH OUR SELECT FOUR.... 2036 CASEY HAS BEEN WORKING AS A PRACTITIONER FOR 17 YEARS NOW, TUCKED AWAY IN HIS SMALL BACKYARD STUDIO. OFTEN TAKING ON SMALL PROJECTS WHICH HE CAN MANAGE ON HIS OWN, HIS DESIGNS AREN’T WELL-KNOWN BUT DELIVERS EXACTLY WHAT THE CLIENT WANTS AMY WAS ABLE TO WORK FOR THREE INTERNATIONAL FIRMS, EACH FOR A YEAR. SHE NOW RUNS A SMALL SUCCESSFUL DESIGN FIRM WITH HER HUSBAND, WITH A STRONG FOCUS ON HIRING STUDENTS AND GRADUATES. SHE IS QUITE VOCAL IN THE INDUSTRY, OFTEN ADVOCATING FOR WOMEN TRUDY JUGGLES THE CHAOS THAT IS RAISING A FAMILY WHILE WORKING PART-TIME AS A DESIGN TUTOR AT THE LOCAL UNIVERSITY. SHE MAINTAINS HER REGISTRATION BUT ONLY DOES SMALL JOBS FROM HOME, HOWEVER ONCE HER YOUNGEST SON MOVES OUT SHE PLANS ON RETURNING TO WORK FULL-TIME WITH A FIRM BORIS QUIT ARCHITECTURE SIX MONTHS AFTER GETTING HIS FIRST JOB, WHICH CONSISTED MAINLY OF DETAILING AND INTERNAL ELEVATIONS. HE FELT IT WAS BENEATH HIM, AS HE EXPECTED TO BE WORKING ALONGSIDE FRANK GEHRY UPON GRADUATING. HE NOW WORKS AS A REAL ESTATE AGENT MORAL OF THE STORY ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL CAN ONLY DO SO MUCH, IT CAN’T BE EXPECTED TO FIX THE INDUSTRY OR THE WORLD. HOWEVER, IT DOES PRODUCE FUTURE ARCHITECTS, AND HUMANS, THAT CAN DO JUST THAT. ALTHOUGH TODAY WE FACE GENDER INEQUALITY, POOR DEVELOPMENTS AND ISSUES OF STUDENTS NOT BEING PAID, JUST TO NAME A FEW, IT’S UP TO US FUTURE ARCHITECTS TO ENSURE THESE ISSUES AREN’T STILL AROUND AT OUR TWENTY-YEAR REUNION. . . .
